The Ohaus SP4001 Scout Pro portable precision electronic balance
has a capacity of 4000 g and an accuracy of 0.1 g (also called
readability). The high-contrast, six-digit LCD shows results in
seven weighing units and multiple application modes. The balance
can be operated using AC power or four AA batteries, for full
mobility in the field and when a power supply is hard to find,
and the auto off function can be enabled to power off the balance
automatically to conserve power. The balance has an external
calibration system to ensure accurate measurements, and requires
a 2000 g calibration weight (sold separately). An integrated
shipping lock protects the weighing cell during transportation or
storage, and overload protection prevents damage to the load cell
if too-heavy samples are mistakenly used.
The balance weighs in seven common weighing units: gram,
kilogram, ounce, pound, combined pound-and-ounce, troy ounce, and
pennyweight, and the application modes include parts counting,
percentage weighing, totalization, and display hold for oversized
samples. An integrated below-balance weighing hook suspends bulky
items beneath the balance for weighing. The ABS plastic housing,
along with a sealed front panel and molded spill ring, protect
the balance from environmental influences and spills, and the
stainless steel platform can be removed for easy cleaning. A
built-in security slot for locks and cables protects the balance
from unauthorized use or theft. The balance is manufactured to
ISO 9001:2000 standards, and warrantied by manufacturer for two
years.

Balances are measuring instruments used to determine the mass of
an object, while scales are used to measure the weight of an
object. The measurement results from balances are generally
considered to be more precise compared to results from scales.
Mechanical balances are the simplest type of balance, and use a
lever and slide to indicate the measurement. Conventional
balances are commonly used in offices, the jewelry industry, and
in kitchens, and display results digitally, but are less precise
than analytical balances. Analytical balances measure to a high
degree of precision and accuracy (0.0001 g or better), and
display results digitally. These balances have a cover with doors
to prevent dust and airflow from affecting the measurement.
Moisture balances analyze moisture content in a material sample,
using infrared or halogen heat sources to dry the sample and then
calculate the moisture content from the before- and after-drying
weight, and display results digitally, on the balance, or
transfer the information for display on a computer.
Ohaus manufactures scales and balances for laboratory,
educational, retail, food, and jewelry applications. The company,
which was founded in 1914, is headquartered in Parsippany, NJ.
